Meet the man behind OYO rooms. Ritesh Agarwal
A few years ago, Ritesh used to sell SIM cards in a small town (Rayagada) in Odisha. Today, he is the owner of a million-dollar company at the age of 24.
Ritesh knew from the beginning that the conventional was not for him. More than his studies, he was excited by the young and enterprising world around him.
To pursue his dream of becoming an entrepreneur, he enrolled into Indian School of Business & Finance, Delhi but he left the college mid-way to start his own company.
At 16, Ritesh was selected to be part of the Asian Science Camp held at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai.
When he was just 17, he wrote a best-selling book; The Encyclopaedia of Indian Engineering Colleges.
In 2011, at the age of 18, he founded Oravel, an online platform for booking budget hotels, that later became OYO, which stands for “On Your Own” The same year, Ritesh got funding of Rs.30 lakh from VentureNursery. OYO has raised $450 million from investors so far.
When he was 19, he was selected for the Thiel Fellowship—a global contest in which Ritesh was the only winner from India.
